Sculpture Creation Process
At VELA SCULPTURE, every sculpture begins with an idea and is brought to life through careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, and strict quality control. Because each material has its own character, every sculpture requires a different production method to achieve the best artistic and structural result.
Below is an overview of our production process for stainless steel, bronze, fiberglass, and marble sculptures.
Stainless Steel Sculpture Process
1. Concept and Design
The process begins with the client’s concept, reference images, dimensions, and installation requirements. Based on these details, we develop sketches or digital drawings to define the form, proportions, and visual effect of the sculpture.
2. 3D Modeling and Planning
For custom projects, we may create a digital 3D model or physical mockup to refine the structure, scale, and details before production begins. This step helps ensure accuracy and alignment with the original concept.
3. Material Selection
We select suitable high-quality stainless steel according to the project’s size, finish, environment, and durability requirements. Material quality is essential for both appearance and long-term performance.
4. Cutting and Forming
The stainless steel sheets or components are cut into the required shapes and then formed through bending, hammering, rolling, or other fabrication techniques to match the sculpture design.
5. Welding and Structural Assembly
Individual parts are welded together with precision to create a stable structure and seamless appearance. This stage is especially important for large or complex sculptures.
6. Grinding and Surface Smoothing
After welding, the joints and seams are carefully ground and refined to make the surface smooth, clean, and visually continuous.
7. Surface Finishing
Depending on the design, the sculpture may receive mirror polishing, brushed finishing, matte treatment, or other surface effects. Additional protective treatment may also be applied when necessary.
8. Final Inspection
Before delivery, each stainless steel sculpture undergoes a thorough inspection to check structure, surface finish, dimensions, and overall craftsmanship.
Bronze Sculpture Process
1. Design Development
Every bronze sculpture starts with a concept sketch, design drawing, or 3D model. This stage defines the artistic direction, proportions, and final presentation of the work.
2. Model Making
A full-scale or scaled model is created by hand or digitally. This model serves as the foundation for mold production and casting.
3. Mold Making
Based on the approved model, a mold is produced for casting. The mold must accurately capture the sculpture’s forms, textures, and finer details.
4. Casting Preparation
The bronze material is prepared and heated to the appropriate casting temperature. Careful control during this stage is essential for casting quality.
5. Pouring and Cooling
Molten bronze is poured into the mold and allowed to cool and solidify gradually. Once the metal has fully set, the mold is removed.
6. Cleaning and Assembly
After casting, excess material is removed and the bronze components are cleaned and refined. If the sculpture is cast in sections, those parts are welded and assembled together.
7. Chasing and Detail Refinement
The surface is carefully worked by hand to restore fine details, sharpen textures, and improve the overall finish of the sculpture.
8. Patina and Surface Treatment
Depending on the desired effect, the sculpture may be polished, chemically patinated, waxed, or otherwise treated to achieve its final color and character.
9. Quality Check
Each bronze sculpture is inspected for accuracy, structure, finish, and artistic consistency before shipment or installation.
Fiberglass Sculpture Process
1. Design and Planning
The fiberglass sculpture process begins with the determination of the sculpture’s form, dimensions, style, and intended use. Drawings or digital models may be prepared for confirmation.
2. Prototype Creation
A prototype or master model is produced by hand or digitally. This model is used to establish the sculpture’s final shape and details.
3. Mold Production
A mold is created from the prototype using suitable materials. Mold accuracy is critical because it determines the quality and detail of the finished fiberglass sculpture.
4. Resin and Fiberglass Layering
A surface coat is first applied inside the mold, followed by layers of fiberglass and resin. These layers are built up carefully to achieve the required strength, thickness, and durability.
5. Curing
The fiberglass is allowed to cure under controlled conditions so that the sculpture hardens properly and reaches the necessary structural performance.
6. Demolding and Assembly
Once cured, the sculpture is removed from the mold. If the sculpture consists of multiple sections, these are joined and assembled with care.
7. Trimming and Surface Refinement
Excess material is removed and the sculpture is sanded and polished to create a smooth and even surface. Details are further refined as needed.
8. Painting and Coating
The sculpture is painted according to the design requirements, whether in solid color, metallic finish, imitation stone effect, or other custom appearance. Protective coatings may also be applied.
9. Final Inspection
Before delivery, the finished sculpture is checked for shape, finish, color quality, structural stability, and overall workmanship.
Marble Sculpture Process
1. Concept and Design
The marble sculpture process begins with concept development, sketches, and size planning. We confirm the desired artistic style and carving direction before material selection.
2. Marble Selection
A suitable marble block is chosen based on size, color, grain, texture, and quality. The right material is essential to achieving the desired visual effect and carving performance.
3. Rough Shaping
The marble block is cut and prepared to match the approximate dimensions of the sculpture. The main outline of the design is then marked on the stone.
4. Initial Carving
Using traditional carving tools and modern equipment where appropriate, the rough form of the sculpture is gradually shaped from the stone block.
5. Detail Carving
Once the main structure is established, finer tools are used to carve details, proportions, contours, and textures with greater precision.
6. Surface Smoothing and Polishing
The sculpture is repeatedly refined and polished using abrasives of different grades to create a smoother surface and bring out the beauty of the marble.
7. Finishing and Protection
Final adjustments are made to improve the artistic effect and overall balance of the sculpture. If needed, protective treatments may be applied to improve resistance to moisture, staining, or weather conditions.
8. Final Quality Inspection
The completed marble sculpture is carefully inspected to ensure that its shape, dimensions, detail, and surface quality meet our standards.
